So I've been watching my neighbors house from across the street.
(Honest, I'm not a stalker)
Mr.S was nice grandfatherly man in his 80's.
This man had 2 patio chairs sitting just inside the garage door,
he would go pick up his wife from the nursing home and they would open the garage door, sit, watch the goings-on and chat.
The last few summers Cassie and I would blow bubbles on our front porch and we would try to get a few to go all they way across the street so they could enjoy them too.
Then as last fall came, I noticed he didn't go out every morning at 7:15 to go have coffee with his buddies downtown.
I saw an oxygen truck come a couple of times.
Then one day I see 6 or 7 cars parked in the driveway and in the street at his house.
NOT a good sign in this sleepy little town.
It really only means one thing around here...somebody died.
The next day Cassie and I were talking about what she wanted to eat for lunch and she wanted Chicken Soup.
It was bitter cold and windy, that sounded really nice.
I kept peeking out the front window, it has a full view of my neighbors house from my kitchen. Still 4 or 5 cars around the house....
You know, one of the really great things about soup is you can make it STRETCH.
That man across the street lived by himself, there's no way he normally kept enough food to take care of all those people.
I got out my biggest pot and set about making a couple of gallons of Chicken Soup.
Half a gallon of it was going across the street.
I decided the chicken I had was a little sparse for that much soup, so I found some sausage links.
This was gonna be good, the smell was intoxicating.
While I let the soup simmer for a bit, I made this quick little card/tag.
I had stamped the center circle a while back, so just cut it out and attached with a dark brown brad to 3 diecut pieces of cardstock.
One for the front, one of kraft where I wrote my note to the family, and one for the back with my numbered label. I inked the edges with some brown ink, to distress it just a bit.
I feel a little guilty that I didn't find out what had changed in Mr.S's life, he was dying of lung cancer. I wish I had made him some Chicken Sausage Soup while he could enjoy it.
Lesson for me, if you see some way you can help someone out..do it..now...
His family must have enjoyed the soup, as the next day my big glass jar was put out on my front porch, clean as a whistle with a lovely thank you card.
Thanks for popping by,
Love, Laura
